Sports Psychiatry
Sports Psychiatry involves the exploration of mental health & mental performance in athletes of all ages. Athletes can experience changes to their mental health that can affect performance, while elements of sports can also affect their mental health. Sports Psychiatry is a medical specialty that explores the mental health of athletes according to a biopsychosocial framework. Referrals must be received from a physician and services are fully covered by provincial health insurance. Common problems referred for Sports Psychiatry assessment include: challenges with mood, anxiety, sleep and eating, ADHD, maltreatment, sport-related concussion, retirement, injuries, and return to sport planning. Management plans may include medical investigations, psychotherapy, mental skills, lifestyle management, and/or medications. The Toronto Rock Sports Medicine & Wellness Centre does not provide crisis or emergency services and does not have the capacity to manage significant safety concerns or complex case coordination. Appointments are available virtually or in person.
